So for my first #BudgetMinded wine, I couldn’t think of a better wine thank this Jaume Serra Cristalino Brut. Several years ago someone brought a bottle of this to our house as a present during a party. I just remember being VERY skeptical that this could be a good bottle of wine at $9. Well, you know what they say about assumptions.

The Setup

Ever since I was proven wrong and knocked down a few rungs, I’ve been trying this wine out on lots of people. I chilled a couple of bottles and had my #WineSquad over to see what they thought.

I made some of my “world famous” Parmesan truffle popcorn as well as a meat and cheese board. I’m learning about cheese too on this wine journey and love trying new ones.

The Skinny

The Jaume Serra winery is in the Penedes region of Spain, not far from Barcelona. This particular Cava is made from a blend of 50% Macabeo, 35% Parellada, 15% Xarel-lo and is made using the traditional Champagne Method. Jaume Serra even imports their yeasts from France. “Champagne like” without the champagne price. The Cristalino Brut was even named the Wine & Spirits Magazine “Value Brand of the Year” for three consecutive years. Given how good it is, the $9 price tag just amazes me.

The Wine

The #WineSquad overwhelmingly liked this one. We all thought it was crisp and refreshing with very nice acidity. Definitely a great match for our popcorn. I was just wishing I’d picked up some fried chicken to go with it. (Next time…) Nice buttery, almost sweet aromas gave way to a dry wine with lots of citrus and green apple on the palate. Hard to go wrong with this one for a crowd. And let me say it again – it’s only $9!!!
